Visit with Katie's brother

Uncle Chris came out to visit this last week. He learned all about baby 101 and mastered changing diapers, feeding, and doing Luca's exercises with him. We were also able to go on a little hike in the cascade mountains.

hard casting

On Wednesday John took Luca in for his weekly casting not knowing that it would be a hard one. Dr. Mosca said it was time to start stretching his foot because the scar tissue was already beginning to form and he brought his feet to almost 90 degrees. The casting and the next 24 hours were very painful for Luca. We loaded him up on Tylenol and Ibu. but he was still in a great deal of pain. Jamie came over and helped Luca and I make it through the day as John was at work. A family from church (the Lanes) also watched him that evening. We were very thankful for all of the help and that he is feeling better today. Hopefully we will change the casts on Monday as his feet look swollen under the casts and we want to be able to contiue this hard process. Thanks for your prayers even for the the unexpected.

New casts

Nurse Brooke came with me yesterday to get new casts for Luca a few days early because John and I thought they were slipping and his toes were sliding further into the casts. Dr. Mosca was pleased with the healing and so was I! His feet looked so much better than they ever have before! He only cried a little while getting his new casts. We went to a going away party after wards for our friend and old roommate, Beth. She is moving to IN to go to graduate school. We will miss her but know she will be back to visit.

Luca

Here is a picture of how I keep Luca's pacifier in his mouth, using his stuffed animal. Luca has had lots of loving hands hold him this week. It has been amazing to have all the support!

Luca

Well, we continue on this recovery process. Things were feeling better on Thursday and then yesterday Luca was fussy and up every two hours last night. He was happier this afternoon and my friend Trisha came over to help us and him. We are hoping that he will be feeling better and sleeping better soon. He gets new casts this Wednesday. The internet isn't working at our house so it is hard to upload pictures. John and I are at the library right now checking e-mail. When the internet at our house starts working again I can put some new pictures up. Thanks for praying.

Luca's recovery

I am glad to report that Luca is beginning to recover from the surgery. The first 24 hours were hard for all of us. He wouldn't drink milk and was either sleeping or crying in pain. John was amazing and I am very thankful he is a nurse. He did a beautiful job helping him through the night! At 10:30 this morning Luca turned the corner and was alert and calm. He watched his mobile in the swing for a while and then feel back to sleep. We are thankful to have lots of support! Thanks everyone.

Sucessful surgery

Luca before surgery with mom and after surgery with dad

We are waiting with Luca in the recovery room at Children's after a successful surgery. Dr. Mosca cut several tendons in his feet. He stretched the foot as far as the skin would allow. We have a follow up appointment in one week where he will get new casts. The anathesiologist named Dr. Walker said that all went smoothly. Luca slept before the surgery and he is sleeping again now. He had general anathesia and then he had a codel (like an epideral) so he cannot feel his feet for the next several hours and is not in pain. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for today. I am relieved that it is over and we can help him stay comforable in this recovery process. It will be exciting to see his feet next week when the casts come off and the new ones go on.

I was organizing Luca's room and found all of his cool homemade hats and thought a photo shoot would be cute. He didn't want to smile too much but I think he is excited about the fall when he will get to wear them:)

Firsts

Luca had three first yesterday:
His first time swimming ( at the Colman pool in Lincoln park- West Seattle)
He slept through the night (10 pm-7:30 am)
He breastfed before going to sleep! I am not sure how much he got but he made it through the night after wards so it must have been enough:)

He has another first tomorrow:
Luca's first surgery. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers as we head into children's first thing in the morning tomorrow- Tues. Aug. 4th
Pray for calmness for John and I and for Luca has he recovers from having several tendons in each foot cut. He will be back in casts for a long time after this surgery. 2 weeks to heal and then back to the stretching and changing of casts every week. Luca's feet are quite severely clubbed and the hope is the someday he will have straight feet but they will be quite stiff.
